Rakim - Words
For my money he is undeniably top five and arguably the best to ever do it. There isn't one great that doesn't list him as an influence. He is a wordsmith. A street poet. The God. Rakim.

I melted microphones instead of cones of ice cream

Imagine Dragons -- Radioactive (Remix) (Ft. Kendrick Lamar)
The fact that this guy didn't win a Grammy is terrible. There is zero doubt in anyone's mind that listens to hiphop, or music in general, that M.A.A.D. City was the album of the year. The creativity and lyricism changed the game. It raised the bar. It wasn't money, hoes, and clothes. It was poetry through struggle. Passion through spoken word. An artist painting pictures of Compton, CA hoping that someone could relate. Seeing him live just reinforces the point. This is once in a generation music. This isn't a semi-talented white guy that made a catchy song about gay rights that caught the attention of the mass public. So, not that anyone really cares but, in one random bloggers mind album of the year is Kendrick's. Album of the past 10 years is Kendrick's. There's a difference between hearing and listening and I encourage anyone that reads this blog to just listen. I mean why not?
